What is Little Athletics?

Little Athletics is Track and Field sport for children aged 5 to 16 years (Under 6-17 years) . The summer season runs from October to March. We also run a winter season for cross country and road walking.

At Joondalup Little Athletics we focus on:

Parents are encouraged to fully participate in our sport by being involved as coaches, officials, and helpers. Little Athletics is not a sport where parents simply watch from the sideline, or pay their fees and then pick up their kids at the end of competition. Your children enjoy their sport so much more when they see you engaged.

Children are encouraged to participate in all the events we offer, and we place most emphasis on recognising personal best (PB) performances and the personal development of each individual junior athlete. Little Athletics offers children a wide range of events, from running to jumping to throwing, so there is plenty of opportunity for children to find favourite events that suit their particular talents.

Little Athletics is a great way for children to get outdoors and be physically active, improving their general health and fitness. Little Athletics is also a great way for athletes to give themselves a strong fitness base for other sports and activities.

How are age groups determined?

Children must be born in 2015 or older. We have age groups from Under 6 to Under 17. Each individual age and gender group train and compete only with their own group in the Under 6 to Under 12s.

Mini Athletes Program

Do you have a 3-5 year old? You might like to consider or mini athletes program. Our mini athletes don’t get a registration number and it’s not necessary to wear the centre uniform.

What happens at Little Athletics?

Joondalup Little Athletics Centre offers training and competition for all its registered athletes. Athletes register to join then they train through the week and compete on a Saturday. At the end of the season there are Championship Days with medals and Centre wind-up with trophies and participation medals awarded to athletes.

Through-out the season, Joondalup also participates in various WA Little Athletics events: State Relay Championships, State Multi-Event Championships, Zones and State Track and Field Championships. These are exciting events where Joondalup athletes get to compete against the best junior athletes in the State.

Training at Joondalup is a little different from some other WA Centres, in that the Joondalup Centre offers a centralised training program to all its members. For Under 6 to Under 12, training occurs in age groups -- every age group and gender has its own coach who organises training for that age group. For Under 13 and up, training is offered in specific event disciplines (ie: sprints, middle distance, hurdles, long and triple jump, high jump, throws, and walks) and athletes can attend the event session that they are interested in. Training and competition occurs at the Arena Joondalup Athletics Oval.

For the U6 to U12 age groups, training is usually one night per week, for the older athletes, training is offered every night, however, athletes can pick which sessions the wish to attend.

There is also a cross-country running and road-walking competition during Winter.
